Ruff Radio was founded in 2004 by a group of up and coming local drum and bass Disc Jockeys (DJs), Microphone Controllers (MCs) and music producers from East London - in the mid 90's, Hash Brown (Martin Brown), Blue T (Tam Preboye) and Darkheart (Jamie Miles) met - they started working together. They organised drum and bass youth projects, which were funded by a charity called Sound Base Training. The charity had its own recording studio called Waterhouse Studios, where Hash Brown, Blue T and Darkheart were able to develop an understanding of the technology behind electronic music, meet local musicians and provide studio time to up and coming/professional music producers.
Waterhouse Studios has a quaint East End 'rags to riches' story. It began in the late eighties in the basement of a co-operative house in East Ham. After attracting the likes of the now established rap poet Benjamin Zephaniah, it finally received funding from Newham Council in 1990 (The Independent, 1994).
The idea to start an internet radio station (Ruff Radio) - this was decided by the management of the recording studio and the charity committee, as they secured funding to develop a large server, which had the capacity to stream live audio and host media content on their website - Hash Brown, Blue T and Darkheart started hosting their Ruff Radio show from the recording studio once a week online (most people don't have access to Wifi in their homes when we started) - they invited guests such as Eastman (Kool FM), Ital (Kool FM), Brockie (Kool FM), Emtek (Kool FM), Papa Gee (Kool FM), Joe Rapid (Rude FM), Java, and Deadlock amongst other up and coming DJ's/MCs from the local area, which expanded to various parts of the UK, Europe, and the world - when the capacity for DJs/MCs to stream live on Ruff Radio from their own home was established in 2006.
Hash Brown, Blue T and Darkheart have been involved in various events around London and Essex, such as Family Grove. They have spent various new years at outdoor events, and have also done guest radio shows on Rinse Fm, Origin UK, Drum and Bass Worldwide, Planetdnb and Phuture Frequency. Their latest project is their Ruff DnB label (established in 2008), which has done fairly well with airplay from the likes of Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson and Crissy Criss. The label has worked with producers such as, Alter Ego, Dirty Deeds, Levela, Dub Zero, Indivision, Macky Gee, Burma and Dual Process etc.
Our objective is to promote artists from all over the world, and to provide a platform for producers to sell their music through - Ruff DnB is the perfect solution if you are looking for a way to promote and distribute your music to retailers such as iTunes, Beatport, Juno Records etc.
